Blood sugar and fertility

Let’s talk about blood sugar balance and fertility.

Blood sugar can be easily overlooked in a fertility journey, but it is foundational in supporting hormone health. Let’s break it down and keep it simple.

Blood sugar highs are a stress on your body.

Blood sugar lows are also a stress on your body.

Cortisol is a primary stress hormone that can be released during high or low blood sugar.

Progesterone is a precursor for cortisol.

When we are constantly triggering a stress response due to high or low blood sugar, we may be converting progesterone into cortisol. This can lead to lower levels of progesterone.

How do we create blood sugar balance?

- eat balanced snacks and meals (protein/fat/carb)

- prioritize protein to keep blood sugar from spiking

- eat more frequently: eating every 3-4 hours can help prevent our blood sugar from getting too low

- pay attention to your hunger cues. If you’re feeling hangry, tired, and getting a headache - it might be a good time for a snack.

A couple of my favorite snacks are a @chomps stick and fruit or @middaysquares. These are easy to keep with me so that I can support my blood sugar on the go.
